Barley Field

Bairds Malt was formed in March 1999 as the result of a merger between two well established and already successful malting companies. The company operates five malting sites across the U.K., stretching from Inverness in the Scottish Highlands to Witham in Essex, South East England. The total annual production capacity is more than 205,000 tonnes which is used primarily in the brewing and distilling industries. Up to 25% of our annual malt production is exported to countries where U.K. malt is held in high regard, notably to Japan and the United States.

Our heritage in malting dates back to 1823 when Hugh Baird & Sons Ltd. was founded. Hugh Baird studied brewing in Edinburgh and the South of England, and with his sons, Hugh and Montagu soon established a flourishing malting and hop business. The other partner in creating the present Bairds malt company was Moray Firth Maltings plc (est. 1967), which pioneered the malting of quality barley grown in Scotland thus simultaneously combining the skill of Scottish farmers with the demand from the many distilleries in nearby Speyside, famous the world over for fine Scotch Whisky.

These two vibrant companies were combined as Bairds Malt Limited through a joint venture in March 1999. Since that date, the company has built upon the combined skills and experience of its employees in plant locations that are strategically distributed throughout the United Kingdom.
