Bairds Malt is currently building a new malting plant in Arbroath, Scotland, it will employ the best current thinking in process control and malting. It is due to be commissioned in late 2009 and malt production should commence by the end of that year with full production established by January 2010.

With a batch size of 380 tonnes (as barley), producing 315 tonnes of malt every 48 hours, the total annual production will reach 57,000 tonnes.

For the technically minded here are some of the special features of the new facility:

All material contact surfaces in stainless steel
Barley washing screws (x2)
Flat bottom ECO steep
Two germination vessels in tower configuration
Duplicate conveying systems
Single deck high efficiency kiln
Cycle time of 48 hours
Kilning can be acheived in 36 hours, offering an additional 12 hours of germination time

Demolition of the old box plant began in January of this year and was completed on schedule during April. Major groundworks are progressing well with the piling already completed. By August 2008 the remaining groundworks should be complete and vessel erection will be completed during the month of September.

A new grain drier will also be built as part of this major project beginning in November 2008 with a view to being commissioned and available for the 2009 harvest intake.
